October
13, 2006 at 7:50pm at the Municipal Building, Ms. Pamela
Lawton was fingerprinted for disorderly conduct. Before she
was fingerprinted there was a rally of more 70 people that came
out to show Lawton that she was not alone. Even though this was
a community effort, a few members of the ONE
HOOD COALITION were the organizers
for the rally: Minister Jasiri X, Cornell Jones, Darnell Drewery,
Paradise Gray, and Khari Mosley. Organizations, politicians,
and the general public both black and white came out and spoke on
her behalf.
"It
is outrageous for a police officer to pull a gun on a child. It
is a racist reaction", said Craig Stevens of the Black and
White Reunion. Reverend John Welch, Da Button Pusha, Celeste
Taylor, Reverend John Monroe, Tim Stevens, Gayle Moss, and Nathan
James were just a few who spoke at the rally. It was a powerful
demonstration of unity and Lawton was very appreciative.
After
the rally outside, it was time to go into the Municipal Building
so Lawton could get fingerprinted. Once inside, everyone who was
outside came in the Municipal Building right behind Lawton to let
her know that they were going to be with her to the end. Lawton
was stressed as she was told by a police officer that her Attorney
Joe Williams could not go in with her as she was fingerprinted.
Those standing by her side were not going to let her go in alone
to get fingerprinted. Finally she was allowed to go in with her
attorney and she was fingerprinted.
As
Lawton was getting fingerprinted, their were speeches made in the
hallway by community leaders about sticking together. It
was mentioned by a supporter that the same numbers that showed up
for the fingerprinting, need to show up for her hearing on October
25, 2006. Assata Richards said, " We always start
off with a bang and end with a thug". That seem to be the
thoughts of a few supporters that evening.
All
of this started from a traffic stop, August 26, 2006, in shadyside
where Ms. Lawton claims Pittsburgh Police officer Eric Tatusko drew
his weapon on her 7-year-old daughter Joshalyn. She ended up
being sited with an insurance violation. Minister
Jasiri X and Paradise Gray of the ONE
HOOD COALITION were not in attendance,
but they were there in spirit. They were in Tennessee visiting
with Actors and Activist Harry Belafonte and Danny Glover who are
aware of Ms. Lawton's misfortune. Belafonte and Glover are very
supportive of Lawton.
