JUST A MAN
BY TONI BROWN
AKA

"MOTHER POETRY"

THE RING, MY MAN BOUGHT ME THIS
AND THIS BLACK EYE, HE DID THAT WITH HIS FIST!
I CAN'T IMAGINE THE PART I MISS.

THE ONLY MAN I TALK TO IS GOD,
CAUSE TRYING TO TALK TO YOU BROTHA'S IS HARD.
YOU ONLY LISTEN WHEN YOUR BEHIND BARS,
WHEN YOU WANT ME TO BID WITH YOU
OR KEEP PAYMENT UP ON YOUR CARS WITH YOU I NO LONGER SEE THE MOON OR THE BRIGHT STARS,
BUT YOU'RE A MAN, UHM!!! YOU'RE A MAN.

YOU WENT FROM A BOY, TO A YOUTH, TO A MAN,
AND THE WAY YOU TREAT GIRLS, TEENS, AND WOMAN
I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND,
AND I'M SURE THAT THE WAY THINGS ARE IS NOT THE WAY GOD PLANNED BUT! YOU'RE A MAN, YOU'RE STILL A MAN.

YOU WALKED OUT ON ME WHEN I CONCEIVED OUR CHILD
YOU DIDN'T GO A SHORT BLOCK
YOU MOVED MANY, MANY MILES
YOU BROKE MY HEART AND ROBBED ME OF MY GENTLE SMILE,
I'M SO MAD! I'D BETTER SHUT UP AWHILE CAUSE
YOU'RE STILL A MAN, UHM!! YOU'RE STILL A MAN.

AS A WOMAN I THOUGHT I LACKED
SO YES, WHEN YOU CALLED I TOOK YOU ASS BACK
AND THE THIN GOT THINNER, AND THE THIN GOT THINNER
AND YOU BECAME TRANSPARENT BOO
AND I STILL COULDN'T STOP LOVING YOU...

WHEN YOU HIT ME I COULD HAVE JUST DIED
INSTEAD I ADDED IT TO THE MANY MANY TEARS I CRY
I WALK AROUND THIS WORLD MUMMYFIED,
TELLING PEOPLE IT'S NOT HIS FAULT, IT'S MINE
I SWEAR I'LL LEAVE HIM NEXT TIME
AND THE TIME HAS COME AND I'M RESTING IN PEACE
GOD HAD A BEAUTIFUL PLACE JUST WAITING FOR ME,
BUT I'VE COME BACK CAUSE IT'S ONE THING I HAVE TO ASK
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE JUST A MAN?

PEACE
