NEGRO LEAGUE PLAYERS HONORED
The Josh Gibson Foundation Hosts the
2007 “Remembering the History” Negro League All-Star Gala

PITTSBURGH,
July 13-15, 2007 - The Josh Gibson Foundation will host the 2007 Negro League “Remembering the History’ All-Star Gala weekend July 13-15, 2007. The 3-day celebration aptly, titled “Remembering the History,” will recognize the accomplishments and contributions of the Negro Leagues and award college scholarships. The scheduled events include a VIP Reception at PNC Park Highmark Legacy Square (Sponsored by Highmark), a Black Tie Gala and Silent Auction at the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center Sports Museum, and concluded by a Meet & Greet (Negro League Players) breakfast and church service at Mount Ararat Baptist Church.

The gala is one of the Foundation’s signature events that attract prominent local and national athletes, local and government officials, business leaders, and professionals. Negro League players in attendance this year include John Miles, Wallace “Bucky Williams”, Ted Toles, the daughter of Satchel Paige (Pamela O’Neal), the family of Buck Leonard (Lugenia Leonard and Rose Hunter) , and the Legendary Monte Irvin serving as keynote speaker. Starting his professional baseball career at age 17, Monte Irvin quickly developed into a power hitter who also hit for average. The right-handed slugger won two batting titles in the Negro National League and on July 14, 2007 will share some of the most important stories in sports history.

“Not only is he a personal friend of Josh Gibson and one of the few Negro League players to enter the Hall of Fame, but I believe he has a powerful story that could encourage and motivate the inner city youth (that the Foundation assists year-long) to play baseball. I could not have asked for anyone better to deliver the keynote address this year”, Sean L. Gibson, President and great-grandson of Negro League Home Run King, Josh Gibson.

Event Corporate Sponsors including: U. S. Steel, St. Petersburg Clearwater Convention & Visitors Bureau, Highmark, Giant Eagle, University of Pittsburgh, PNC Bank, H.J. Heinz, Mesirow Financial, WPXI, and WAMO will welcome former Negro League baseball players and their families at a private VIP Reception at PNC Park Highmark Legacy Square at 6:00pm. on Friday, July 13, 2007.

The Black Tie Gala and Silent Auction, hosted by Emcee Vince Sims, Week-end Anchor/Reporter of WPXI TV, will be held Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Heinz History Center Sports Museum at 6:00pm.

The Josh Gibson Foundation is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, which was established in 1994 in memory of the legendary Josh Gibson who played for the Negro Leagues teams, Pittsburgh Crawford and Homestead Grays. The foundation was established to launch a history and learning center in Homestead, PA to reach out to the families and youth of the community on which Josh Gibson left his mark. Currently, the education programs are being conducted within the City of Pittsburgh through partnerships with PNC Bank, The Pittsburgh Pirates, Mercy Health System, and other regional partners. Our most recent partnership with Nike helps support the athletic programs of the foundation.

Educational programming supported by the Foundation is primarily focused on after school reading, tutoring, and computer skills training. Students are able to receive academic help as well as life skills training through both individualized and group learning settings. These educational programs as well as little league baseball and other recreational activities run year round.
