RENOWNED ACTRESS RENN WOODS TO PORTRAY SADIE IN THE AWAKENING'S ENCORE
Gold Pyramid Screen and Stage Brings Hollywood to Pittsburgh

Littlestown, PA. September 19, 2024 — Renn Woods, the celebrated film, television, stage star, and vocalist, has the role of Sadie, beloved grandmother of her troubled grandson, Jason, in the encore of The Awakening by Pittsburgh playwright Lorenzo Boone. The play will run from September 20 to October 13 at the Carnegie Library Lecture Hall, 4400 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh.

Woods, whose remarkable career began with recognition as a child prodigy at six years old, a television appearance at ten, and her vocal group's Vietnam Tour with Bob Hope, at thirteen years old, brings a wealth of talent and experience to the portrayal of Sadie. She has notable credits including Roots and the role of Dorothy in the first national tour of the The Wiz, at The Music Center, founded by pioneer of live theater in Los Angeles, Gordon Davidson. Woods is known for her powerful performances and advocacy on issues of racial inequality and women's rights.

In The Awakening, Woods sees her role as a tribute to the strength of Black women. "Sadie expects Jason to change his ways, knowing that not doing so is losing him to death or life in the penal justice system," says Woods, emphasizing the character's deep-rooted legacy and the importance of her role in the story. During her time in Pittsburgh, Woods will also visit community-based organizations that serve at-risk Black youth. Her visit aims to inspire and encourage young people to overcome challenges, in line with the themes of The Awakening.

Ja'Sonta Roberts, the director of the play, believes in the power of the arts as a catalyst for social change and echoes the sentiment that Woods' story will provide young people with reasons to avoid the challenges faced by the play's main character. Lorenzo Boone expressed his excitement at having Woods portray Sadie, calling it "a dream come true." He believes that her portrayal will bring depth and authenticity to the character, enriching the production with her talent and passion.
