The
fans poured in at the Benedum Center in downtown, Pittsburgh to
see Charlie Wilson, Con Funk Shun and Pittsburgh’s own R&B
group Artistree. Comedian Kool-Aide who had the crowd laughing
all night long hosted the concert which was held at the Benedum
Center, May 14, 2010.
Artistree opened up
for the major event that was called “The Classic Soul Music
Festival” presented by Groove Productions, Inc. Artistree
sang to a crowd of screaming fans who did not want them to leave
the stage. They were so good that when their set was over, the
crowd demanded an encore.
This event was for
the grown and sexy. Everyone was dressed to impress and when Con
Funk Shun hit the stage, everyone was on their feet. The singing
group sang all of their hits and the audience went crazy.
Finally, Charlie Wilson
hit the stage and started out with a medley of hits from the Gap
Band and then went into his solo chart topping hits. What was
different about this concert is that Wilson let his fans know
that it was not an easy journey for him to be where he is at now.
“I’ve been
on drugs and living in the street. I was diagnosed with prostate
cancer and I’m grateful to be alive. I appreciate all of
you for being here for me through this time and I give God all
of the glory”, said Wilson.
The concert was a sold
out event and everyone left the venue better than when they came
in. Pittsburgh no longer has a black urban radio station and the
event was still sold out. That says a lot for the promoters of
Groove Productions, Inc.
When all was said and
done, the event took us back to a time when singers could sing
and entertain without all of the fluff. It was a concert that
made you realize how fortunate Wilson is to be alive and we are
all the better for it.
