FEATURING A CONCERT
BY CARRIE LUCAS
HEAD DIVA OF SOLAR RECORDS
One
of America’s oldest Black newspapers, the New Pittsburgh
Courier, caps off its Centennial celebration with a dinner, Legacy
Awards Ceremony and gala concert Saturday, February 19, 2011 at
Stage AE on the North Shore.
Distinguished Former Courier Executive Awards will be presented
to the families of P.L. Prattis, executive editor; Earl Hord,
general manager; and John H. Sengstacke, former owner, editor
and publisher.
Carrie Lucas, known as Head Diva of Solar
Records, inaugurates her comeback tour in Pittsburgh when
she entertains the Courier celebrants. Ms. Lucas made six albums
in seven years for Solar and Soul Train Records, including such
singles as “I Gotta Keep Dancing” and “Gotta
Get Away From Your Love.” Of her music, one YouTube enthusiast
commented, “They don't make music like this anymore. At
the clubs here in Chicago, this song and others like it, blew
the doors clean off of the hinges. How many of today's songs can
you say that about?”
From its establishment in 1910, the Pittsburgh Courier grew to
become the largest, most influential Black newspaper in the nation
with a circulation of 250,000 and over 400 employees in 14 cities.
Among its award-winning journalists was Frank Bolden, who covered
WWII, and interviewed luminaries such as Gandhi, Franklin Delano
Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin. For 40 years,
photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris captured everyday
people and places in the nightclubs, alleyways and workplaces
of Pittsburgh.
According to Rod Doss, current editor and publisher of the Courier,
“It is an honor to continue the legacy of these great journalists
and to honor three of the individuals who put the newspaper at
the forefront of African-American chronicles.”
Accepting the awards on behalf of their late fathers are:
· Patricia Prattis Jennings, former principal keyboardist
for the Pittsburgh Symphony;
· Marva Harris, retired executive with PNC Financial Group,
Earl F. Hord, former director, Economic Development of Allegheny
County, and Dr. Betty Robinson, retired co-founder of the Manchester
Academic Charter School;
· Robert Sengstacke, photographer.
Tickets for
the dinner, awards ceremony, concert and dessert reception (doors
open at 6:30 p.m.) are $150; for the awards ceremony, concert
and dessert reception (doors open at 7:45 p.m.), tickets are $75.
