Blood Bank, a business unit of The Institute for Transfusion
Medicinesm, and the August Wilson Center for African
American Culture have partnered to address the lack
of blood donation in the African American community,
especially among those 17 - 35 years of age.
To address this issue, the two organizations have partnered
to create a multimedia campaign, which was launched
at an event on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at the
August Wilson Center, 980 Liberty Avenue, immediately
following Pittsburgh’s African American Heritage
Day Parade, the route of which ended at the Center. The event featured a youth-produced public service
announcement video premiere, a mixed media visual art
exhibition, a mini-documentary premiere, and a special
performance by national recording artist “Fantasia.” The free concert was phenomenal and she sang
all of her hits including a song made specifically for
her Pittsburgh fans. Later that evening at Club Mosiac,
she did a brief performance for her fans and danced
in the crowd. Fantasia also joked with me and
said that I better put her photo on my Brotha
Ash Productions flyers
and postcards along side the other celebrities or else. She will definitely be added without a doubt.
Fantasia will be checking out Brotha

exclusive story and photos and you should do the same. I have to shoutout Emmai Alaquiva of YaMomzHouse
and Orlana Darkins of The Darkins Group for showing
me such a great time.

Holiday Inn in Oakland. Line dancing, a deejay and a live
band make up the itinerary for this event. The live bands
range from jazz to hip-hop and R&B music. Fifteen years
ago Shawn Hopson and his partners decided to do a First
Friday’s event at the Braddock Hills Holiday Inn.
In the beginning it was a deejay and a jazz band. The deejay
played on one floor while the jazz band was on another floor.
It was a nice flow because it gave people options to hear

up in Warren Court where older men and women in the community

VILLAGE REUNION TO CONTINUE IN SPITE OF DEMOLITION
Written by Ashley G. Woodson for the New
Pittsburgh Courier
Old
friends and families who grew up in the St. Clair Village
Community gathered for the 16th annual St. Clair Village
reunion July 16-18. The reunion started in 1995
because of the close- knit neighborhood. Lou Shealey,
president of the St. Clair Village Committee, will keep
the reunion going along with his committee members as
long as there is breath in his body. He moved
to St. Clair Village in 1954 and moved out in 1967. St.
Clair Village was built in October 1953. It was once a
thriving neighborhood with families who were very close.
It wasn’t until recent years that crime took a toll
on the neighborhood and reduced it to a high crime area.
With the Pittsburgh Housing Authority demolishing the
housing complex, it will be nothing but a memory for the

is simply: My family is part of our shared history.
My father taught me that success requires working together -
as a team. Not as Democrats or Republicans but as Pittsburghers.
Only by putting party politics aside and working together can
we say YES. Yes to fixing streets. YES
to keeping areas around our schools safe. YES
to making Pittsburgh a green energy center. YES
to ending the culture of gun crime and gangs. Our mayor says
we have an inferiority complex. I say he's wrong. He says we
can't; I say we can. I say YES to making this
city even greater. The City of Champions should no longer just
refer to the grass and the ice - but to our schools, our innovation
and our children. We've always been as tough as steel. But know
the truth - we're smart as well. We've polished our city and
we're proud. But we're not done. We're just beginning. Let's
say YES to forging ahead!

It
brought all the dee-jays together one last time before WAMO
goes off the air next month. You
could see the unity that has developed between the dee-jays
and other staff members that were present. While some were laid
back and reserved, others looked at it as a time to accept change

B-FLAMES
ON FIRE WITH 'CERTIFIED STAR'
By Ashley G. Woodson for the New Pittsburgh Courier
Gerry
Howard, better known as B-Flames, is
the next hip-hop artist to rise up out of Pittsburgh. He became
interested in hip-hop by listening to the music when he was
younger. His mother and father were always big on music and
his brother, who has been rapping for 11 years, persuaded him
to join him. He grew up on the West Side of Pittsburgh.
His rap name, “B-Flames” comes from his being in
the booth, always spitting (rapping) about something hot.
He blazes the booth and comes out with hot songs, or as he says,
“All the stuff I spit be flames, ya dig?”
“I’m
in this for the long hall and people probably don’t know
that I’ve been doing this for 11 years. I’m
22 years old, says B-Flame. “I plan on moving forward
to better and big things by having my music hit different cities
and get a national record deal. I plan to collaborate with more
people in the city. I have already collaborated with some artists
from Pittsburgh. ”

SHARING
THE BEAT WITH DJ WORM
By Writer
Ashley G. Woodson for The New Pittsburgh Courier
DJ
Worm knew his calling after watching shows and videos on MTV.
From there he has evolved from scratching and mixing platters
to a writer and producer. “I was in the ninth
grade and I started off deejaying,” said Worm.
“I’d seen DJ Scribble doing his thing on MTV and
I said to myself that I want to do that. I started deejaying
and I bought a keyboard and started making hot music.”
For Worm (who got his handle from his fourth
grade teacher and the name has since stuck), hip-hop
is more that a passing fad or a trend.“It’s
a way of life and it’s how I live. Everything in the world
has a beat and sound,” he said. “I
was brought up listening to music and watching videos. I used
to make beats by using sticks hitting my dresser.” As
Worm grew up, so did his involvement.

LADIES
NIGHT WAS LADIES DELIGHT
By Writer Ashley G. Woodson for the New Pittsburgh Courier
Innuendos
swirled through the Peterson Event Center as many speculated
as to whether or not there would even be a show. At
first, the venue did not seem as if it would pull in a big crowd
because it was 8 p.m. and the room was half-empty.
The show was scheduled to start at 8 p.m. with Sisquo and Dru
Hill scheduled to perform, but they were a “no show.”
Rumors were spreading that this concert was not going
to happen, but it did.

Singing
sensation “Brandy”
and her brother “Ray J.”
visited Pittsburgh in September to get the message to the youth
that they need to register to vote and to actually vote on November
4, 2008. The turnout was great to see Brandy, but for
the youth registering to vote was another story. Everyone showed
up at the old Sneaker Villa which is now called “Villa”
in downtown Pittsburgh on Wood Street. Brandy also promoted
her album called “Human”, which is due for release
November 11, 2008. Even though no one actually registered
to vote, Brandy, Ray J., DJ Boogie (WAMO), Tee Jay (WAMO), local
celebrities and Brandy’s number #1 fan Tyrone talked about
the importance of the Presidential election.

COVER
TO COVER....
HARD LESSONS LEARNED NOW SHARED
By Ashley G. Woodson
for The New Pittsburgh Courier
It’s
been called gritty and raw; its definitely not light
poetry—sweetness, flowers and light—if anything
it has a disturbing bite because it reflects the soul of a Black
man who has struggled and lost, and how he is now struggling
to win, which he chronicles in his book of poetry, “Ghetto
Hot Sauce.”
Author
Valdez Thompson is making the transition from prisoner
to poet, putting pen to paper to document and share the rough
road that is his journey. That
said, with a title like “Ghetto Hot Sauce,” the
book is bound to capture attention but what’s up with
the name?

FBI
LOOKING INTO MONROEVILLE MAN'S
POLICE TASERING, DEATH
PITTSBURGH
-- Allegheny County homicide detectives said early indications
are that Swissvale police were justified in using a Taser to
subdue a man who later died, but the FBI has also decided to
investigate.
The
official cause of death for Andre Thomas, 37, of Monroeville,
is still undetermined, pending results of toxicology tests.
The county medical examiner's office said those results won't
be available for eight to 21 weeks. A spokesman for the FBI's
Pittsburgh office said that the agency is opening a preliminary
investigation into Thomas' death. The FBI declined to
comment further or say which specific aspects of the case will
be under investigation.

WAMO
on-air announcer Ki Ki Brown has left the WAMO building and
is moving on to bigger and better things; and she wanted to
give her listeners the real deal to put rumors to rest.
“It was time to take a new course in life and in my career.
Life is about special courses that we have to take to teach
us how to survive,” said Brown. “Both Sheridan
and I know that it was time for me to take a new course.
The doors were always open for me to ask any question and I
received a lot of support when I had ideas and wanted to venture
off into different areas of my career.
“This
new course in my life and career involves learning more about
me and my capabilities, learning how to deal with difficult
people and difficult situations; those are surprises quizzes,”
Brown said. “Hopefully, I will graduate and become the
next music director and/or program director for a major market
station. But I have more to learn.”

- AUGUST 2007 I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing one of Pittsburgh's
most talented actors and producer, Carl
Clemons. I started this interview back in January of
2007 and because Carl is always involving and getting new projects,
we waited until now to publish it.
1)
How did you become interested in acting? To me I became interested by God instilling the talent in
me as well as it being a craft I enjoy doing that makes me happy.
2)
What was your acting job? On "The Wire" my job was to guard the drug shipment
coming in from The Greeks that was to supply the CO-OP with
their re-up.
3)
How did get a part on "The Wire"? A blessing a major one at that I had been trying to get on
"The Wire" since season 2 & 3. I
was constantly sending in my headshot and resume but got no
calls I finally did a major "no no" in the acting
world "I CALLED THE CASTING OFFICE". I was fortunate
enough to speak to a lovely lady named Sareva Racher she is

HOMEGOING CELEBRATION OF GWENDOLYN JUNE CAMPBELL ELLIOT
By Staff Writer Ashley G. Woodson
May
18, 2007 - The founder of Gwen's Girls and the first
African American Police Commander, Gwen Elliot, was laid to
rest May 17, 2007.
Funeral services were held at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church with
Reverend Joan Prentice as the officiant. Back in the late
80's ,I had the pleasure of meeting Gwen years ago and I will
miss her very much. My family owned a business called "Vera
and Rick's Lounge" in the Hill District and Gwen was their
quite often for lunch. She always kepted it real with me and
I am glad that I knew her personally.
She
paved the way for many woman to reach goals that were not able
to be met years ago. Along with being the first African
American Police Commander, her greatest achievements involved
her struggle to make crimes against women and children, priorities
in the police department. After retiring from the Pittsburgh
Bureau of Police, Elliot founded Gwen's Girls (www.gwensgirls.org)
--as she recognized there was a lack of understanding for the
complexity of the needs of at-risk, and that existing services
fell short of meeting these gender-specific needs. Family,
friends, community leaders, Pittsburgh police officers and other
law enforcement officers came out to pay their respect to Gwen.
Everyone
had something powerful to say about "Gwendolyn June Campell

PITTSBURGHER'S REINVENTED
By Karen Bryant for Pop City Magazine
MAY
9, 2007 - Throughout its history, Pittsburgh has reinvented
itself. The region has enjoyed great wealth, survived dire
downturns and created amazing new comebacks and opportunities.
How? Strong, determined and creative people. As Pittsburgh
continues to transform, the people behind the city make the
difference. Pop City takes a look at four Pittsburghers who
have reinvented themselves and in the process, are helping to
reinvent our region.

reinvention serves as a reminder of the unmet potential in all
of us. As he explains it, he was sidetracked by the streets
for awhile, like too many African American youth. But Woodson

Command
Operations and Protection Services (COPS) presented legendary
hip hip artist DMC to Pittsburgh to speak with adopted and foster
children at Second Chance on Frankstown Avenue and to perform
at the Greater Pittsburgh Coliseum for the "Down With The
King Cabaret". We know about the DMC the artist, but
he wants everyone to know Darryl McDaniels, the man who recently
found out he was adopted in 2001 at the age of 35, the man who
has a new album and a new lease on life. Realizing his purpose
and destiny McDaniels decided to make it possible for those
less fortunate children without parents to have a life changing
experience. McDaniels and his fellow adoptee Sheila Jaffe have
started Camp Felix through our Foundation, The Felix Organization
to send children without parents to camp. I had the pleasure
of interviewing and hanging out with DMC for two days in a row.
First I interviewed him at CJ's in the Strip, he spoke with
the children at Second Chance in Homewood, and he performed
The Greater Pittsburgh Coliseum. After the initial interview
we sat in his car and listened to a few tracks from his latest
CD.We also went to Arts across the street from CJ's
for diehard fans to take photos and get autographs. It was plain
to see from the beginning that DMC was a changed man from the
experiences of his adoption. He was focused on the children
of the world and how he could help.

For
Black teens and young adults in the United States, homicide is
the leading cause of death. Unfortunately, this is not news
to Pittsburgh. Last year there were 95 homicides in Allegheny
County, 75 of those involved Blacks. In 2005, there were a
total of 97 homicides. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania holds
the dubious distinction of having the highest rate of Black on
Black homicides in the nation.
The
escalating level of violence in Black communities prompted an
unprecedented gathering of community and grassroots organizations
and activists to declare that the time for talk has past. "White
people are not killing us. We
are killing us," said Tim Stevens,
head of the Black Political Empowerment Project and an organizer
of what was basically a call to action meeting held last Thursday
at the Hill House on Centre Avenue.

Event unites young bucks and old heads
The
first Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Awards was a resounding success.Defying the myth that equates hip-hop with chaos and violence,
a first class event was produced in a mainstream venue in the
Golden Triangle and signified the maturity of Pittsburghs
hip-hop community. The
event drew a cross section of the Black community along with movers
and shakers of the hip-hop recording industry, and both participants
and spectators left energized and optimistic for the future of

COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER

By

October
13, 2006 at 7:50pm at the Municipal Building, Ms. Pamela
Lawton was fingerprinted for disorderly conduct. Before she
was fingerprinted there was a rally of more 70 people that came
out to show Mrs. Lawton that she was not alone. Even though
this was a community effort, a few members of the ONE
HOOD COALITION were the organizers
for the rally: Minister Jasiri X, Cornell Jones, Darnell Drewery,
Paradise Gray, and Khari Mosley. Organizations, politicians,
and the general public both black and white came out and spoke
on her behalf.

Peace
all - I would first like to applaud all of the Brothers and Sisters
who came out to support Ms. Lawton yesterday at the rally.
All of our efforts should not go in vain. We must continue to
support each and every cause that will allow us to stand as one
unit and fight against oppression. However, honestly, I am disgusted
and downright outraged over the lack of support by the "HIP
HOP" Community. The actions of the police is what we as
so-called "hip-hoppers" say we speak out against in
our music , yet when the opportunity comes to raise up and stand
- the "hip-hoppers" were in short supply. This has
to end. I am sick of hearing people are down for the "hip
hop movement" yet, I fail to see the appearance of the soldiers.
This should not be tolerated. If you are truly down for the "movement"
- get MOVING!!!! - Any one of us could have been Ms. Lawton.
Why does it take the victim to be "you" before "
you " stand up and do and/or say something. HIP HOP and the
prilviage of being able to use the micophone as tools are a blessing
-but it doesn't stop with a song!!!!

MAYOR
BOB O'CONNER PASSES AWAY
REST IN PEACE

Brotha
Ash Productions wants to take this
time to extend our condolences to the O'Conner family. September
1, 2006at 8:55pm Mayor
Bob O'Conner's battle with cancer came to an end. Months
ago we found out the tragic news that O'Conner was diagnosed with
cancer. It was very apparent that something was wrong when he
did not show up for the All Star games a few months back. Everyone
was hoping that he would be able to fight the disease, but sadly
he could not.
Eighteen
years ago, Pittsburgh faced the same dilemna with Mayor Richard
Caliguiri. The city was very sad and it took a while for Pittsburgh
to bounce back. Once again, our thoughts and prayers go out to
the O'Conner family.
He
was a great man, leader and friend who will be missed.
From his
humble beginnings on the Hill, the future musician could have
grown up to be yet another statistic. A walking testimony
of perseverance in the face of adversity, Pittsburgh-native and
Jazz legend Dr. Leo Casino will debut his documentary, Return
To The Hill, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Kelly-Strayhorn
Theater in East Liberty.

BLACK POLITICAL CONVENTION
SWANN OR RENDELL? By BAP
Staff Writer Ashley G. Woodson
Friday,
March 24, 2006 LJS Publishing held The Black Political
Convention at the Holiday Day Inn in Wilkinsburg to an audience
of political figures and concerned citizens about the upcoming
election for governor. Governor Ed Rendell and his opponent GOP
candidate Lynn Swann are neck in neck in the latest polls. Rendell
spoke briefly about African American issues and other issues that
affect Pennsylvanians. He lets us know about his accomplishments
as Governor and how we wants to continue what he started. His
speech was brief and then he left the building. Minutes later,
Lynn Swann and his wife arrived to a crowd eager to asked him
about the issues. Swann circulated the room like a seasoned
professional and he talked with anyone who would listen. We stood
around him as talked about one issue after another. When asked
about jobs by a concerned citizen, he said, "Pennsylvania
missed creating over 33,000 new jobs in 2004 alone thanks to the
Rendell tax increase. Even though people were eager to ask
Swann questions, the buzz in the room was, "What is he
going to do for African Americans if he is elected"?
Overall, the opening ceremony was a great success and food was
delicious thanks to Luther Sewell and LJS Publishing.

Evening with Spike Lee". Anji, WAMO's morning show DJ,
hosted the event. We watched snippets of his films, and then Spike
came out joking about how the Steelers won. The lecture was a
biographical picture of Spike's life as well as food for thought
on how to live out your own dreams. He was funny, serious and
always on point. He informed us of how he was not sure what he
wanted to do with his life until attended college. There was a
question and answer period at the end of the show, which was hilarious
at times and then we went to the African American Cultural Center
to visit with Spike. From the beginning of his film career with
"She's Gotta Have it" to his current film "She
Hate Me" coming out this summer, the outspoken film director,
actor has become a legend in his 20 years of being in the business.
We thank everyone from the African American Cultural Center for
bringing this event to Pittsburgh. Shout outs to Heather Clark,
Spike Lee, Anji, DJ Supa C, Nathan James, Soulsis, D.L. Norris,
B Mock, Billy Jackson, Anna Thorpe, YaMomzHouse, Larry DeMarzo,
Vanessa Germany and everyone who came out to see the legendary
film maker.
Brother
Marlon Returns to WAMO to Now Bless
the Mic!
Martin,
a former WAMO morning show host returns with a new name and a
new purpose every Sunday morning from 8am-12pm. "Back
then I was known as Sean Richards, host of the Breakfast Jam along
with Sly Jock and Taylor Diaz. Now I return as myself using
my real name Brother Marlon, minister of the gospel, and focused
on making a positive difference in the lives of people by using
all of the gifts that God has given to me. I want to be effective
in being a good leader, inspiring people to go higher in God,
and by teaching the word of God."
"I have
been given an awesome opportunity to return now to the place where
I got my first professional start in radio. I grew up listening
to WAMO, and back then to have an opportunity to work for the
station was a dream ome true. All of a sudden I felt compelled
to leave in order to pursue the call of God. It was difficult
but needed for what God had planned for my life." Martin
walked away in January 1998 to follow another path. Now in January
2006 eight years later (eight being the number of new beginnings)
Martin returns to host the number one rated Gospel Show in Pittsburgh.

7 Big Ben Roethlisberger leds
Pittsburgh to a Super Bowl Championship
By BAP
Sports Analysist Smokin Jim Frazier
Jerome
Bettis ended his memorable NFL career on top in his hometown.
The 33-year-old running back announced his retirement Sunday night
immediately after the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks
21-10 in Super Bowl XL at Ford Field.
Hines
Ward accepted the Most Valuable Player trophy, but the award could
have easily have gone to Big Ben, Alan Faneca, Antwaan Randle
El or Willie Parker. Parker set an NFL record during Sunday's
third-quarter when he broke free for a 75-yard touchdown, the
longest running play in Super Bowl history.
Parker
scored the touchdown, but Alan Faneca created a hole large enough
to drive a truck through!

Summit Against Racism
by BAP
Staff Writer Brotha

The
8th Summit Against Racism was January 21, 2006 at the East Liberty
Presbyterian Church and the turn out was great. Tim Stevens,
who is the founder of the Black & White Reunion, welcomed
everyone to celebrate the 8th Annual Summit and the 10th Anniversary
of the Black & White Reunion. Black and white people united
to once again build bridges to end racism in Pittsburgh. Singers
Brian Wright, J.G. Bocella and Teresa Hawthorne were excellent
as they sang in tribute of racism. Spoken word artists Ashley
Cole, Nathan James and Shaela Montague-Phillips of Meeting of
the Minds gave us something to think about as they expressed
their views through their art. The purpose of this years
summit was to discuss three major issues: Citizens PoliceReview
Board, Community Police Relations and Supporting and Advocating

Cowher,
Bettis, Big Ben, Hampton, Porter
and Polamalu lead Pittsburgh to Super Bowl 40! by BAP
Sport Analyst "Smokin Jim Frazier"

The
Pittsburgh Steelers played in Super Bowl 10, 30 and now Coach
Bill Cowher will lead his team to Super Bowl 40! Before
the season Coach Cowher signed a contract extention. Congratulations
to the Pittsburgh Steelers for locking up the BEST
Coach in Football. Bill Cowher will coach Pittsburgh until he
is a NIFTY-FIFTY and beyond! I think MOST of
the FANS in Pittsburgh must have played Cornerback, because
they have short memories! The Steelers fans blamed Bill Cowher
for losing 4 out of 5 HOME AFC Championship game and losing
a Super Bowl, but HISTORY proves that the Denver Broncos, New
England Patriots and the Dallas Cowboys were the BETTER TEAMs.
Cowher and the Steelers will create some history of there own
in Detroit against the Seattle Seahawks. Jerome Bettis, former
Detroit Mackenzie High School football star, is going back home
to WIN the Super Bowl....read

A REQUEST
FROM BROTHA
ASH
CAN WE ALL JUST GET ALONG IN 2006 AND BEYOND?
I
usually don't get caught up in New Year's resolutions, but I do
want to share what my goal is for 2006. I would like for us
as a black race to come together to be strong, black and proud
of who we are. That is only possible if we come together. Is
it possible for us as a black race to pull together, bury the
past, work together, and just get along - YES IT IS!!!
If we come together and stop
hatin on each other, stop killing
each other, stop talking about
each other (well, that may be asking for too much), and most
important stop
being "CRABS IN A BARREL", we can achieve anything
as long as we do it TOGETHER. Brotha
Ash Productions is taking a stand
and putting it out there for all of our beautiful black people
to make the effort in 2006 to make this happen. We will continue
to do our part by sharing our rich heritage and being there for
the African American community to the fullest, but we are reaching
out to you, (the community and other black organizations) to let
you know that we want and need your help. It is possible and it
is a reality. We are stronger together than apart.
If
you have any ideas on our we can make this happen, please send
it to BlackUnity@BrothaAshProductions.com
because we want to make a difference in our communities. We
will post your comments for everyone to see.
For those of you who are caught up in haters being against you,
remember what God has for you, no MAN or WOMAN can take from you.
Help
us bring our race BLACK TOGETHER one person at a time.

Troy
Polamalu is the best Safety in the game
Just ask NFL Rookie of the Year "Cadillac" Williams By BAP
Sports Analysis Smokin' Jim Frazier
His
given name is Troy Polamalu Aumua or you can call him TPA or 'FU
II' or make up your own nickname.
In DIRE need
of help in the secondary, the Steelers used their 2003 first-round
pick on the BEST Strong Safety in the DRAFT! Troy brings the FEROCITY
of a Kendrell Bell, the FLAIR and PASSION of Junior Seau and the
DIVERSE TALENTS of Carnell Lake!
Polamalu
is a guy who has the unique ability to be able to HIT like a LINEBACKER
and COVER like a CORNERBACK!
Troy is not
very big. He is strong, but he is not the strongest. He is fast,
but he is not the fastest. He is considered, EXTREMELY, short
for a safety. Now, here is WHY Smokin' Jim is predicting that
Troy Polamalu Aumua will go down as one of the GREATEST STEELER
OF ALL-TIME!

The 17th
Anniversary Harvest Celebration Dinner
A Benefit for Just Harvest
by Writer Ashley G. Woodson
This
benefit took place at the Omni William Penn Hotel, Thursday, October
27, 2005. It was hosted by WTAE's Sports Reporter Andrew Stockey
and a variety of organizations came out to support the cause.
Media critic and writer Eric Alterman was the main speaker for
this event and he delivered a powerful message. He is one
of the most honest media critics around today. He talked about
the act of penal prayer and how the purpose of prayer is to committ
yourself in reconstruction. He spoke on many topics which included
how people blame George Bush for the war more than they blame
Saddam Hussein. "How can it happen that we all share the
same values, and yet we have lost so much power?...read

If
theres one thing this city could do without, its diatribe.
Its divisive, uncouth and dirty. Its what many of
us call hatin. Our President considers it unpatriotic.
Its often mistaken for the funk of the proverbial crabs
in the barrel a metaphor that black folk seem quite familiar
with. Whatever it is, weve reached a point in society where
people have decided that it cant be productive, and is unnecessary.
Diatribe
is the language of the underdogs, necessitated when society has
its way with the out-resourced while quieting any of their chances
to respond. Those underdogs are usually those with darker
skin, cheaper credit ratings, less ownership in society and cornier
fashionwear...read

Media Sources concerning Hurricane Katrina. I, along with
millions of Americans across our nation, have been glued in

people across this country, including those directly affected,
as well as politicians, community leaders, and even some in

The
New Pittsburgh Courier is one of the oldest and
most prestigious Black newspapers in the United States, with a
rich and storied history. Pittsburgh attorney and journalist Robert
L. Vann founded the Pittsburgh Courier in 1910. At a time when
mainstream newspapers would not or could not solve the problems
of the Black community or report news without bias, the Courier
served as an alternative voice for Black Americans, focusing on
issues that aroused awareness in a community just beginning to
find its voice. The Courier, covering news around the world reached
an all time high circulation of 450,000 with over 400 employees
in 1948. In 1966 John H. Sengstacke purchased the newspaper and
renamed it the New Pittsburgh Courier. It became part of Sengstacke
Newspapers (now Real Times, Inc.) - the largest and most influential
Black newspaper chain in the country - which also includes the
Chicago Daily Defender, Michigan Chronicle, Michigan Front Page
and (Memphis) Tri-State Defender. Today the New Pittsburgh
Courier continues to serve as a vehicle for Black expression,
now publishing Award-Winning local editions twice a week on Wednesday
and Saturday serving southwestern PA and a new online version
www.newpittsburghcourier.com offering timely news, commentary,
sports, entertainment and other information of interest to the
